Business symposium on "Enhancing India-Kenya bilateral Trade & Investment" organized by High Commission of India, Nairobi

The High Commission of India, Nairobi organized a business symposium “Enhancing India-Kenya bilateral Trade & Investment” on Tuesday, 22ndMarch, 2016 in Nairobi.  High Commissioner H.E. Ms. SuchitraDurai inaugurated the symposium and delivered the welcome address.

India is one of Kenya’s largest trade partners. In 2014-2015, bilateral trade between the two countries amounted to over US $4.2 billion. Indian companies have also invested in Kenya in the telecom, automobile, petrochemicals, chemicals, banking, insurance and agro-processing sectors. Indian firms enjoy an excellent track record in executing contracts in the IT, power transmission and other sectors. The Government of India is also extending Lines of Credit in the power transmission, agriculture andSME sectors. In 2015, Indians topped the number of tourist arrivals to Kenya from Asia. In turn many Kenyans go to India for studies, healthcare and tourism.

The main thrust of the event held today was to showcase to the Kenyan audience Indian flagship programmes particularly the ‘Make In India’ programme and to discuss ways and means to take bilateral trade & economic relations between India and Kenya,which are already good, to a much higher level.

The event was attended by captains of Kenyan industryand CEOs of Indian companies operating in Kenya. Kenyan agencies like Export Promotion Council (EPC)and the Kenya Association of Women Business Owners (KAWBO) also made brief presentations during the event on strengthening bilateral trade relations between India.  Amb. Christopher M. Chika, Director, Asia and Australasia Directorate, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Trade, Mr. KipronoKittony, Chairman of KNCCI, Ms. Ruth Mwariki, CEO of EPC and Mr. Vimal Shah, CEO of BIDCO spoke on the occasion.

Shri R. Chandramouli, First Secretary (Commercial and Economic) made a presentation on the recent developments in India in the Commercial/Economic front as well as the Flagship Schemes introduced by the Government of India in the last 20 months including ‘Make In India’, Digital India, Skill India, Start-up India and Smart Cities programme. A short film on “Make In India” was also screened during the event.
